Frequently Asked Questions

When should I see a physical therapist?

If you have:

  • Pain (acute or chronic)

  • Injuries (sprains, strains, fractures, post-surgical)

  • Difficulty with movement or daily activities

  • Balance problems or a history of falls

  • Chronic conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, or neurological disorders

What happens during a physical therapy session?

Your first session includes an evaluation of pain, range of motion, strength, flexibility, and activities of daily living. Then, a personalized treatment plan will be developed for you, with future sessions that may include a combination of manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, modalities, and education.

does physical therapy hurt?

While some discomfort is possible as you regain mobility, your therapist will evaluate your pain tolerance, and treatment will be adjusted to suit your needs. Open communication is key!

how long does physical therapy take?

Treatment duration depends on your condition and goals. You and your therapist will discuss expectations and options during your evaluation and will adjust further as you progress.

what should i wear to physical therapy?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows movement is best. You may need athletic shoes for exercise components. We have private changing rooms and areas to store your belongings.

Do I need a referral for physical therapy?

This depends on state laws. In some, including New York and Connecticut, you can see a physical therapist without a doctor’s referral. Medicare has its own requirements.

Is physical therapy covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans cover physical therapy but the amount of coverage varies by plan. At NOLA Physical Therapy + Performance, we strive to make this process as easy as possible. We will be happy to contact your provider to determine your benefits, and we will provide a detailed plan of your insurance benefits, including the number of visits covered, co-payments/co-insurance, and if pre-authorization is required.
